Mari Winsor

Mari Winsor (1950–2020) was a fitness visionary widely credited with turning Pilates from an exclusive Hollywood secret into a global household name. Often called the "Queen of Pilates," she reached millions through her ubiquitous infomercials and accessible teaching style.

Early Career: From Dance to Pilates

Before her fitness fame, Winsor was a professional dancer and choreographer.

  • Music Video Star: In the 1980s, she was a featured dancer in iconic music videos, most notably Michael Jackson’s "Smooth Criminal." She also appeared in films like Road House and Salsa.
  • Classical Training: In 1992, she earned her certification from Romana Kryzanowska, a direct protégé of Joseph Pilates, ensuring her "Winsor Pilates" method remained rooted in authentic technique.

The Winsor Pilates Empire

In 1990, she opened her first studio in West Hollywood. Her "Dynamic Sequencing" method—a low-impact, high-intensity approach—quickly attracted A-list celebrities including Miley Cyrus, Drew Barrymore, Sharon Stone, and Melanie Griffith.

  • The Infomercial Boom: In 2003, she partnered with Guthy-Renker to release a series of workout videos. The campaign was a massive success, selling over 50 million programs worldwide.
  • Author: She penned several influential books, including The Pilates Powerhouse and The Pilates Pregnancy.
